Warning: DEEP FREEZE & SNOW AHEAD IN NORTH TEXAS JUST IN TIME FOR THE SUPER BOWL

This afternoon the National Weather Service issued one of their "SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENTS" all in CAPITALS, which in Internet speak indicates one is shouting.

Apparently our recent bout of balmy warm weather in North Texas will be coming to an end by Monday night with the arrival from cold Canada of an Arctic cold front.

Snow is possible on Wednesday, with a chance of significant white stuff falling on Friday. Friday is the day of some of the Super Bowl Parties that I have not been invited to. With many more on Saturday. That I have also not been invited to. Followed by Sunday's biggest Super Bowl Party of all. The actual game. Which I may watch on TV.

Methinks Mother Nature is conspiring with the Powers That Be to deliver an icy punch that probably was not what the NFL was looking for when they agreed to come play a game in Jerry Jones' shiny new stadium.

...WINTRY WEEK AHEAD FOR NORTH TEXAS...

AN ARCTIC COLD FRONT WILL MOVE INTO NORTH TEXAS MONDAY EVENING... AND SWEEP THROUGH ALL OF NORTH TEXAS BY MID-MORNING TUESDAY. TEMPERATURES WILL FALL THROUGHOUT THE DAY TUESDAY...WITH AFTERNOON READINGS DROPPING INTO THE TEENS IN AREAS NORTHWEST OF FORT WORTH. ALL OF NORTH TEXAS IS EXPECTED TO BE BELOW FREEZING BY TUESDAY EVENING. THE NORTHWESTERN HALF OF NORTH TEXAS MAY REMAIN BELOW FREEZING UNTIL FRIDAY.

FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET WILL IMPACT MUCH OF NORTH TEXAS ON TUESDAY. THE ACTIVITY MAY TRANSITION TO SNOW LATE IN THE MORNING NORTH OF I-20. A WINTER STORM WATCH IS IN EFFECT GENERALLY ALONG AND NORTHWEST OF A LINE FROM BRECKENRIDGE...TO MINERAL WELLS...TO GAINESVILLE...WHERE ACCUMULATIONS OF SLEET MAY EXCEED 1/2 INCH. ADDITIONAL ICE AND SNOW ACCUMULATION MAY OCCUR JUST SOUTHEAST OF THE WATCH AREA AND WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES WILL BE ISSUED TOMORROW FOR MORE OF THE AREA.

GUSTY NORTH WINDS WILL COMBINE WITH THE FRIGID TEMPERATURES TO PRODUCE WIND CHILLS IN THE SINGLE DIGITS AND TEENS TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY. WIND CHILLS MAY FALL BELOW ZERO TUESDAY NIGHT INTO WEDNESDAY MORNING ACROSS THE NORTHWESTERN HALF OF NORTH TEXAS.

A Freezing Monday Morning In Texas With Sweet Chili Sauce

You are looking out at my icy 2nd Monday of the last year of 2010 view, this early morning of December 13.

It is 26 degrees out there. Brrrrr.

It is about twice as hot here up in the Seattle zone. Where heavy rain continues to fall with the rivers now in flood mode, closing a lot of roads, due to mudslides, with Amtrak no longer able to make it to Portland.

My distressing ailments of the last week seem to have abated for the most part. This pleases me.

Yesterday I went to Chinatown in Arlington for the first time in a couple months. I'd run out of chili sweet sauce, oyster sauce and some other good stuff. I went to Saigon Cho Market at Pioneer Parkway and Collins Street first. They did not have the sweet chili sauce I wanted. So, I went to where the former occupant of Saigon Cho moved to, to a former Albertsons near 360 on Pioneer Parkway.

I forget what the name was of the market that moved from Pioneer/Collins to Pioneer/360, but it is no more. Yesterday I saw it had turned into Hiep Thai Arlington. And it was its Grand Opening. So, I got a lot of unexpected good stuff.

I don't know why the Chinatown markets are not more popular with the Anglo population. I love how I go in one of these markets and I am the only white guy. It is like getting to visit Viet Nam, Thailand and China. Actually, mostly Viet Nam. One of the strange unplanned for consequences of one of America's ubiquitous wars. As in a large number of Vietnamese Boat People ended up in Arlington, creating a thriving community and adding one more nice patch to the beautiful American quilt.

I am going to brace myself against the cold and get in some aerobicizing today. I have been borderline sedentary the past couple days.

It is currently not windy, unlike yesterday. I am hoping the current no wind remains steady.

Freezing This Sunday Morning In Texas

It is 32 degrees at my location on this second Sunday of the last month of 2010.

Those 32 degrees must be why the view from my window this morning is a bit frosty.

I seem to have recovered, finally, from whatever it was that was causing me a respiratory malady. Did yesterday's wind blow the bad stuff away?

Was there bad stuff in the air of late? A lot of locals seemed to be having some breathing woes.

In Texas there is no state agency that monitors the air quality in any meaningful way.

Because Texas does not have any state agency that monitors the air quality in any meaningful way, the federal government tries to help with air and water quality issues.

Like in the past week, or so, the EPA was appalled to find that the drinking water supply to some homes in south Parker County had an acceptable level of methane and other bad stuff. Methane is another name for natural gas.

The Texas state agency that should have been appalled that the result of some poorly regulated Barnett Shale Natural Gas Driller had been contaminating a water supply, instead made the EPA and the federal government intervention the issue, making the embarrassingly bogus claim that Texas had looked into the water problem and saw no problem.

Anyway, I'm glad to be back breathing easier. For now.

Merry Christmas Eve Morning From Chilly Fort Worth Texas

Merry Christmas Eve Morning from chilly Fort Worth, Texas.

I am waiting for the sun to come up and light up the place so I can see my way to the pool to go swimming.

I'll likely have to wade through some water to get to the pool. I heard wet stuff hitting my bedroom window a lot last night. At times it sounded as if the wet stuff may have been frozen, hitting the window with extreme prejudice.

Yesterday the temperature managed to almost get into the 80s. Overnight a cold front has pushed the warmth away.

The Big Chill will continue to get chillier throughout the day, with possible snow. High winds are supposed to help bring in the Big Chill.

I've had one White Christmas since I've been in Texas. Tomorrow there is no forecast of precipitation in any form. But, if it snows today enough to provide a white cover, there is a chance the white could survive til Christmas morning.

I will be sure to document tomorrow's possible White Texas Christmas with photos, if it happens.

Freezing Again In Fort Worth With Carrot Sweet Potato Bacon Pea Soup

You are standing on the Handley Post Office parking lot, with me, in the picture, looking a bit northwest at one of the 820/30 flyover passes that were rendered invisible due to fog 2 days ago.

If we are looking northwest that would indicate the flag is pointing to the south and being hit by a very stiff breeze from the north.

Last night when I last looked at the temperature it was 65. When I saw the temperature this morning, at 6, it was 29. Since then it dropped to 26 with a 19 degree Wind Chill. Since we hit that low we've bounced back to a balmy 29 with a Wind Chill of 25.

Anyone want to make a guess as to whether I went swimming this morning?

I've been making a lot of soup, of late, in an attempt to reverse my unsightly, decreased activity caused, weight gain.

Today's is Carrot Sweet Potato Bacon Pea Soup.

Now, I know it would seem that adding bacon to a soup is counter-intuitive to the weight loss thing. But, I bake the bacon in the oven, hence the name, rendering out most of the fat. Then it gets rinsed with hot water with paper towels sopping up some more bacon fat.

That is the Carrot Soup simmering in the picture. Lunch will be around 1. I'm also making bacon cornbread muffins. Don't be late or you won't get a muffin.

Swimming With Sub-Freezing Temperatures In Fort Worth Texas & A Jerry Jones Mystery

You're looking at my view of Fort Worth freezing in the picture. We went 5 degrees under freezing last night. It is coming up on 11 in the morning this first Saturday of December at a balmy 38.

Brrrrr.

I know I'm adding evidence to the case to be made regarding my possible insanity, but I got in the pool this morning before 8. I warmed up on the machines in my weight room. Then jumped in the pool.

It was shocking. I got wet and got right out and in to the hot tub. After I was done in the hot tub I felt no inclination to jump back in the pool

I am determined to do something aerobic today. All this inactivity does all sorts of bad to me. I quickly put on weight like a hunk of fattened up cattle getting plumped up before the slaughter.

I believe the Tandy Hills Natural Sanatorium Area is in my future for the day. Unlike my attempt to walk in the cold a couple days ago, today I will be prepared.

On a totally unrelated note, I just got email from an Arlington grandma who wants my help in solving a mystery involving Jerry Jones, Wal-Mart and an Arlington Storage Facility. Sounds intriguing. She gave me 2 numbers to call. She says she has done some digging and has uncovered some good stuff. But she needs help writing it all out.

This could be interesting. Or not.

Still Freezing In Texas

Okay, I know I've whined about it before, but I'm in a whining mood, so I'm gonna whine about it again. As in the schizophrenic weather of Texas is so annoying.

Yesterday was so warm I had my windows open and was tempted to turn on the A/C. Then today it's back in the DEEP FREEZE. I think our high for the day was 34. I think it was freezing when I went hiking on the Horseshoe Trails on Lake Grapevine after shopping at a super crowded Costco, that had more people cramming the aisles than when I was there before Christmas.

Where is this recession I keep hearing about?

Well, okay, other than all those shoppers, lots of cars on the road and restaurants with lots of cars in the lots, I did see some signs of the bad stuff that's going on. I saw a Circuit City with its going out of business sign. I saw the Alan Young GMC dealership with its empty lot, due to GMC shutting it down and taking the cars. I saw a lot of people having a free lunch eating Costco samples today. Including me. Yes. Hard times.

These cycles of HOT & COLD are wearing me down. It's like that torturous month I spent last summer in Tacoma, miserably shivering the entire month, for more reasons than the temperature. It took me quite some time to recover from that month last summer. Bouts of cold, like today, bring back the pain, sort of like post-traumatic stress syndrome, I suppose.

Well, the heater just came on, so warm air is now blowing down on me, giving me temporary relief from the cold. For now.

I need a tropical vacation. I hear Puerto Rico is nice.

We're Freezing Again In Texas

That's the view from Miss Puerto Rico's balcony late Friday afternoon. It was an 80 degree day. Very pleasant. I had the windows open and was tempted, at one point, to close the windows and turn on the air conditioner.

I was almost back believing in Global Warming again.

But then this morning we are back in a deep freeze, as in it is only 30 out there at 10 in the morning. Brrr. The furnace is back on.

I was not successful in getting a new camera at the Arlington Costco yesterday. I'm able to temporarily revive my current camera out of its drop-induced coma to take a picture or two, like the one from Miss PR's balcony. And then it dies again.

I think I'll go up to the Grapevine/Southlake Costco today to see if my new camera is there. That Costco is a lot nicer than the Arlington one. It's more like one you'd find in Costco's homestate of Washington. Which makes sense due to Southlake having the D/FW Metroplex's highest percentage of transplanted Yankees, as in customers who have been in a West Coast Costco and thus have a higher quality expectation.

It's the same for the Southlake School District. The parents are used to non-Texas school standards and so they make their expectations known to the school board. And so Southlake has top-rated schools.

I read this morning that Gar the Texan has temporarily given up reading children's sci-fi type books and is instead taking someone's advice that he read some non-fiction. So, apparently Gar the Texan is now reading "Columbia History of the World." He is rushing through history, currently he's at the part in the World's History where the continents form and life begins.

Gar the Texan has a long ways to go. It's my hope that by the end of this book he will be able to talk about something other than computers, religion, Harry Potter and German beer. I hope it doesn't shock him too much when he gets to the part where he realizes his beloved Germans were bad boys long before World War's I & II.

We're Freezing in Fort Worth

Coming up on 2 in the afternoon we are still below freezing here in Fort Worth. As in right now it is 28 with a Wind Chill Factor making it feel like 19. According to WeatherBug.

That's me hiking at the Tandy Hills about an hour ago in the dark photo. It's a snow clouds type sky. The white stuff may fall later today. That happens rarely in this part of Texas.

I had to find my long underwear to make hiking possible. I think I had 4 layers on top, two of which had hoods, both of which I pulled over my wool stocking cap. And I wore two pairs of gloves. Eventually I overheated.

Now, I know you're wondering if I went swimming this morning. Well, wonder no more. A bit before 8 I went down to the pool. The air temperature was 25, with WeatherBug saying it'd feel like 19, due to the wind. It was less windy this morning than when I went hiking, which I guess accounts for WeatherBug's Wind Chill Factor being the same 19 degrees.

So, this morning was the oddest getting in the water sensation yet. Due to the air being so cold the water felt warm. I stayed in it longer than yesterday when both the water and the air were way warmer than this morning. I swam maybe 10 minutes, then got in the hot tub. Did not stay in the hot tub long. I got out and back in the cold water for about 2 minutes.

I think I have gradually desensitized my skin nerve endings. They are so traumatized now that I think they've given up sending signals to my brain telling me that I should feel cold.
