Google Remembers Driving Miss Daisy To Monument Valley & State Fair Of Texas & More

Two days in a row, for the first time, Google has sent to my email, emails purporting to be memories from that day, in which I actually remember all the memories.

At the upper left, that is me looking at my antique, long gone Casion digital camera, which had a feature which allowed you to rotate the camera lens towards oneself making for what, in this century, is known as a selfie.

In this particular 'selfie' we ae in Monument Valley, in Arizona, two days after getting off a Lake Powell houseboat. The day we exited the houseboat we stayed at the San Juan Inn, in Mexican Hat, Utah.

Below the selfie, on the lower left, that is the sky ride at the State Fair of Texas, in Dallas.

The upper right is the lake in Veterans Oasis Park in Chandler, Arizona. Below the lake photo is Driving Miss Daisy Around Chandler Veterans Oasis With Snakes

The lower right is an arch in Arches National Park in Utah.

And now, on to today's Google memories...

The upper left is, once again, the State Fair of Texas.

The other four Google memories are all from Dreamy Draw Park at Piestewa Peak, in Phoenix. At that location we did Dreamy Draw Hiking Miss Daisy In & Out Up Piestewa Peak.

That was a memorable day. Mom had a lot of fun getting rolled on trails through the park. I remember at one point mom memorably saying, "I didn't think I'd ever get to do something like this again.

I do not think mom realized how steep the trail was, a couple times. The transit chair had good brakes.

So, there you go, my Google memories from the past two days...

Windy Walk Around Sikes Lake Thinking About Texas State Fair Fried Jello

I needed a break from mountain climbing and web page editing, so today when my noontime regularly scheduled time to be vertical came about I headed to Midwestern State University to have myself a walk around Sikes Lake.

Extremely windy today, which somewhat mitigated the temperature being in the upper 90s.

As you can see, via the view through the Arch de Sikes, today is less stormy than the last time I looked through this Arch in this blog venue.

Among the web page editing was finally getting around to this year's State Fair of Texas annual Big Tex Choice Awards.

This year's Big Tex Choice Awards shows up on one of my other blogs in State Fair Of Texas 2016 Big Tex Choice Awards With Fried Jello & Cookies.

The Big Tex Choice finalists had the usual mix of possibly tasty and a bit disturbing. Among the possibly tasty was Fernie's Down Home Chicken Pot Pie Pocket with Mac ‘n Cheese Dip, along with Southern Fried Chicken & Dumplins and  Injectable Great Balls of BBQ, oh, and Deep Fried Bacon Burger Dog Slider.

The two winners were the contenders I found a bit disturbing. The winner of the Big Tex Best Taste Award went to Fried Jello. A deep fried cherry jello concoction. The winner of the Big Tex Most Creative Award was State Fair Cookie Fries.

I am not much of a jello or cookie fan. Frying either of those items seems more than a little bizarre to me.

A Tale Of Two Town's Temperatures Via Spencer Jack's Dad

When last I checked in on Facebook I saw that Spencer Jack's dad, he being my favorite nephew Jason, also known as FNJ, brother of my favorite nephew Joey, also known as FNJ2, had shared the temperature forecast for Mount Vernon and its Skagit Valley Western Washington environs for the coming week.

Looking at the evidence Jason provided, on Facebook, screencapped above, it appears that Jason's zone on the planet is looking forward to a week of natural air-conditioning.

While at my zone on the planet, judging by my temperature predicting evidence, it appears I will need to rely on un-naturally air-conditioned air to keep cool in the coming week.

I am hoping that within a month the temperature at my zone on the planet gets down to Jason's naturally air-conditioned level.

I am planning on going to this year's State Fair of Texas. When I go to the State Fair of Texas I prefer that the temperature be chilly enough to warrant long pants, because I have gotten chilly a time or two in short pants at the State Fair of Texas after the sun goes down.

This year's State Fair of Texas starts up September 27, ending October 20.

The last time I went to the State Fair of Texas I drove to Dallas, found myself directed to a parking lot a distance from Fair Park, with transportation to the fairgrounds provided by a Trinity Rail Express train. I'm thinking taking the Trinity Rail Express (TRE) train to Dallas, and then the DART train to Fair Park, might make for an interesting day.

Or a nightmare of missed transit connections....

2013 Big Tex Choice Award Winners Are Deep Fried Cuban Roll & Fried Thanksgiving Dinner

The eagerly anticipated ninth annual Big Tex Choice Awards for the 2013 State Fair of Texas were announced on Labor Day.

This year the winners actually sound tasty and something I would be willing to try, unlike some of the winners previous years.

Deep-Fried Coke and Deep-Fried Butter come to mind.

This year's winner of the coveted Best Taste Award went to Isaac Rousso for his Deep Fried Cuban Roll.

The Most Creative Award went to Justin Martinez for Fried Thanksgiving Dinner.

From the Big Tex website we get a description of the winners and the top competitors. I believe all will be available for consuming at the State Fair of Texas which starts up September 27 and closes on October 20.

Big Tex Choice Award Top Picks...

Did Godzilla Torch Big Tex?

On Facebook this morning I saw the above new explanation as to what set Big Tex on fire at this year's State Fair of Texas.

I've not read anything about any investigation into what caused Big Tex to go up in flames, other than it was some electrical malfunction. I have not read anything about why it was that Big Tex was constructed of such flammable material.

And what about the children? It had to be traumatic for a little kid at the fair, gawking at Big Tex, listening to him talk, watching him wave his arm and then to suddenly see Big Tex start to smoke, then burst into flames.

Fairgoers can get fairly close to Big Tex. On my last visit he was surrounded by a train and landscaping and a fence. When Big Tex burned up did the crowd run? Or did the conflagration happen so suddenly that Big Tex was toast before there was a chance to run away from the flames?

Is anyone suing the State Fair of Texas for traumatizing their little kid with a flammable Big Tex? How about those people who were stuck high in the air, on a Midway carnvial ride, for hours, on the same day Big Tex died?

Big Tex Burns Up Today At The State Fair Of Texas

This morning I was driving in Hurst, listening to the radio, when I heard the shocking news that the iconic symbol of the State Fair of Texas, Big Tex, had burst into flames, with Big Tex totally destroyed in the conflagration.

I later learned Big Tex met his end due to an electrical short in his neck that sparked the fire that quickly consumed Big Tex.

Why was Big Tex made out of what must have been very flammable material I can not help but wonder?

I also heard reports that the past few days Big Tex had been talking a little funny, suggesting that this electrical problem had been festering for awhile.

Big Tex was something like 60 years old. I suspect by the time the 2013 version of the State Fair of Texas is ready to open a new Big Tex will be ready to greet fairgoers.

If you never got to meet Big Tex and hear his booming voice, in his classic Texas accent, watch the video below that I made from my most recent visit to the State Fair of Texas. In the video I visit with Big Tex before wandering through the noisy State Fair of Texas Midway...

The 2012 State Fair Of Texas Big Tex Choice Awards Deep-Fried Health Food

That is a Fried Bacon Cinnamon Roll on a stick you are looking at. Doesn't that look delicious?

This delicious looking thing on a stick won the Most Creative accolade at this year's State Fair of Texas Big Tex Choice Awards.

The Big Tex Choice Awards are awarded on Labor Day.

The State Fair of Texas starts up in a couple weeks, September 28, to be precise. You have until the Fair's closing, October 21, to have yourself some Fried Bacon Cinnamon Roll.

Fried Jambalaya won the coveted Best Taste Award. Fried Jambalaya is the creation of Abel Gonzales, the man behind past winners like Fried Cookie Dough, Fried Coke and my personal favorite, Fried Butter. For his award winning Fried Jambalaya, Mr. Gonzales somehow glues shrimp and Cajun sausage together, coats that with a flavored flour, then deep fries the conglomeration.

Butch Benavides is the genius behind the creation of the Fried Bacon Cinnamon Roll. He takes a perfectly innocent cinnamon roll, covers it with pancake batter and crumbled bacon, then deep fries and dusts the result with sugar.

The finalists who did not win the two grand prizes created equally tasty sounding fried concoctions.

Picnic on a Stick sticks spicy chicken, tater tots and dill pickle slices on a stick, then dipped in batter, rolled in bread crumbs, fried, served with sauces in the form of BBQ, ranch or honey mustard.

Deep Fried Mac-N-Cheese Sliders take macaroni and cheese, batters it in bread crumbs, deep fried, then stuck in a bun, along with a hamburger patty.

Chicken Fried Cactus Bites takes thinly sliced prickly pear cactus pads, coats them in batter, then deep fried. Served with sweet & spicy jalapeno ranch and agave nectar dipping sauce.

Fried Pork Wing deep fries pork that has been slow cooked for 6 hours, then rolls the pork in a bacon chipotle sauce. Served with homemade BBQ potato chips.

Deep Fried Divine Chocolate Tres Leches Cake soaks a slice of chocolate tres leches cake in buttermilk batter, then deep fried, dusted with cinnamon, then topped with whipped cream, strawberry slices and peaches, then to add some sweetness, drizzled with a syrup.

I am so excited to go to this year's State Fair of Texas to try all of these delicious sounding delicacies. This should be very helpful in attaining my goal of being morbidly obese by the start of 2013.

A Dense Monday Morning Fog Greets North Texas After The Texas Rangers Tie The World Series

You can sort of see via the pre-dawn view from my secondary viewing portal on the outer world that this next to last Monday of the 10th month of 2011 is a foggy morning in Texas.

A dense fog always seems so odd to me at this location. I've always associated fog with being near large bodies of saltwater. The only saltwater near this parched part of the planet is fracking saltwater polluted by the Barnett Shale gas drillers.

Changing the subject from fog to baseball.

Well, North Texas slept a bit sounder last night, peacefully going to sleep knowing the Texas Rangers beat St. Louis in Game 4 of the World Series.

I had intended to go to the State Fair of Texas this year. In the abstract, before the fair started, this seemed like something I wanted to do. But, somehow from the day the fair opened, in September, til closing on Sunday, I did not make it to Dallas.

My right arm is back aching bad again. Because of that pain and the pain of trying to find my way to my swimming pool through a dense fog, I think I'll skip swimming this morning.

A Cold Front Arrives For The Last Day Of September & The First Day Of The State Fair Of Texas

As you can see in the picture the sun has begun its pre-dawn sky glowing process on this last day of September.

With today being Friday, September 30, over at Fair Park, in Dallas, the State Fair of Texas begins. That means I have til October 23 to make it over to Dallas for the state fair.

Had the State Fair of Texas opened yesterday it would have been one HOT first day of the state fair.

Yesterday we hit 100 for the 71st time in 2011, breaking the temperature record for September 29, which had been 99 degrees, set over a half century ago, in 1953. Yesterday was also the 4th latest 100 degree day. The latest it has ever reached 100 in this parched part of the planet was on October 3 of 1951.

Last night this parched part of the planet also had a thunderstorm. I saw a lot of lightning strikes and heard a lot of thunder rolling, but not much rain fell. Maybe more rain fell in other locations.

Last night's thunderstorm brought in a cold front, dropping the temperature last night. The lows for the next few days are scheduled to be in the 50s.

The sun is now providing sufficient illumination to allow me to find my way to the pool without needing a flashlight. So, I'm going swimming now.

Enjoying Big Tex Choice Winner Fried Bubblegum At The 2011 State Fair Of Texas

That delicious looking concoction you are looking at in the picture is Fried Bubblegum.

Justin Martinez's Fried Bubblegum creation won the 2011 Most Creative Big Tex Choice Award, for the 2011 State Fair of Texas which opens in Fair Park in Dallas on September 30, closing on October 23.

Fried Bubblegum is bubblegum-flavored marshmallows dipped in batter, fried and decorated with icing and powdered sugar.

The 2011 Best Taste Big Tex Choice Award went to Allan Weiss for his Buffalo Chicken in a Flapjack.

Buffalo Chicken in a Flapjack is a skewered buffalo chicken strip, coated with flapjack batter, rolled it in jalapeño bread crumbs before deep-frying, served with a side of syrup.

The top 2011 contenders which almost made it to Best Taste or Most Creative status were....

Deep Fried Pineapple Upside Down Cake is pineapple rings dipped in cake batter, fried, then topped with a glaze made of caramel, sugar and cinnamon, with a cherry on top.

Deep Fried Texas Salsa is a mix of jalapeños, roasted garlic, onion, tomato and pepper rolled together, dipped in corn masa and crunchy tortilla chips, then deep-fried and served with melted cheese.

El Bananarito is a deep-fried banana rolled in a flour tortilla then topped with whipped cream, powdered sugar, cinnamon and vanilla, topped off with hot caramel or chocolate syrup.

Fried Autumn Pie is a puff pastry filled with pumpkin, cream cheese, powdered sugar and pumpkin spices, deep-fried then rolled in ginger, cinnamon and sugar.

Hans' Kraut Ball is browned pork sausage, onion, garlic, sauerkraut, mustard and seasonings rolled into a ball, covered with bread crumbs, deep-fried then served with spicy mustard, raspberry chipotle or ranch dressing.

The Walking Taco is seasoned ground beef, lettuce, onion, fresh tomato, grated cheese, sour cream and salsa in a nacho cheese-flavored Doritos bag.

During the course of the 7 years of the existence of the Big Tex Choice Awards there have been more than a few fried concoctions that sounded a bit on the disgusting side, to me. Along with a few I might consider trying. But never have. The Walking Taco sounds like I might be able to eat it, this year, but the Walking Taco was not a winner.

Below is the Most Creative and Best Taste Winners of the Big Tex Awards of the past 7 years. Of these Deep Fried Butter seems like it might be tasty....

The State Fair of Texas In Dallas Ends Today While Last Night The Texas Rangers Beat The New York Yankees

One would think I could sleep in late on a nice quiet Sunday. One would be wrong.

Looking out my bedroom window you can see it is very dark out there.

It is already October 17. The last day of the State Fair of  Texas. By the end of today another State Fair of Texas will have closed for the year without me managing to make it to Dallas to have me some Deep-Fried Beer.

The Texas Rangers are one win closer to being in the World Series, via beating the New York Yankees last night. I think I could hear the cheering. The Ballpark in Arlington is only a few miles east of where I am sitting right now.

It is 59 degrees at the current point in time, about a half hour before the sun finally gets around to lighting up the place. When that happens I am going swimming and will be staying in the pool til I am chilled to the bone. Which should not take too long.

What Is Happening At The State Fair Of Texas In Dallas Friday October 8

Looking at the list of what is happening today, Friday, October 8 at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas I can see why going to the fair wears me out.

I do not believe I have read what has been sculpted out of butter this year. I am a big butter fan, so that butter sculpture is a must see when I go to the fair.

Getting to the fair has been made way easier now that a DART line takes you right to the entry. The last time I went to the State Fair of Texas I parked at a remote lot somewhere to the east of the fairgrounds. The fair provided a couple means to transport fairgoers to the fair from the remote parking lot, with one of them being a TRE (Trinity Rail Express) train.

The State Fair of Texas is very easy to find, it is just a little south and east of downtown Dallas. Just aim yourself for the big wheel sticking high up in the sky, or consult this map. If the long list of what is happening at the State Fair of Texas today is not sufficient enticement to cause you to go to the bother of being a State Fair of Texas Goer, them maybe my video with Big Tex and the Midway will help convince you that you want to go to the State Fair of Texas.
