Kay Bailey Hutchison Irks Another Fort Worth Native

Last month Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison breezed into town and said some remarkable things about Fort Worth. So, I remarked about her remarks in a blogging.

Judging by a letter to the editor in this morning's Fort Worth Star-Telegram at least one other Fort Worther shares my concern and wonderment regarding this hopefully not gonna be, but likely will be, boondoggle known as the Trinity River Vision. Or sometimes as the Trinity Uptown Project.

Anyway, below is the letter from a sensible Fort Worth citizen....

Serving pork and earmark to KBH

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison blew into town Aug. 19 and was hoodwinked by the Trinity Uptown people.

After a brief stop at Trinity River Vision Authority’s office in downtown Fort Worth, she effused, “I think this is just amazing.” (See: “Sen. Hutchison praises Trinity Uptown,” Aug. 20)

What is amazing is that the senator rushed to judgment after hearing from only the program’s gung-ho nepotistic drumbeaters.

Was the wannabe governor told that there is substantial vocal opposition to this earmark boondoggle?

Does the senator not know that President Bush has taken a strong stand against such earmarks and that might-be President John McCain has never voted for an earmark?

Did she ask whether any protesting property owners whose land is caught in the crosshairs of the Vision would be hauled off their land kicking and screaming, a la eminent domain?

Did she ask if environmental consequences could arise like a monster from the waters of this controversial project?

Was the senator not told that the authority, knowing that money has charms to soothe a savage breast, is shelling out taxpayer money for land in the project at the rate of two and three times the Tarrant Appraisal District’s valuation?

It is amazing, senator, what can be done when hands are in the taxpayers’ till and nobody is paying attention.

Authority officials were eager to point out to her that River Oaks, Crestwood, Brookside, Burton Hill and North Crest would receive better flood protection if the Trinity River levee were raised six to 12 inches in some places.

Right on!

None of the opponents to the boondoggle object to raising levees for flood protection.

That’s what ought to be done — not the antithesis of leveling levees for an economic development boondoggle.

Inanity of inanities; all is inanity! Truly amazing!

Sarah Palin's Record

Alma, aka The Songbird of the South, sent me an email about Sarah Palin this morning. Little tidbits about Ms. Palin, that were supposedly vetted by whoever vetted her for John McCain, keep surfacing. Like a couple decades ago her husband Todd was arrested for driving while intoxicated. And her 17 year old unmarried daughter is 5 months pregnant. And will be marrying the father.

Below is the incoming from Alma....

Yesterday was John McCain's 72nd birthday. If elected, he'd be the oldest president ever inaugurated. And after months of slamming Barack Obama for "inexperience," here's who John McCain has chosen to be one heartbeat away from the presidency: a right-wing religious conservative with no foreign policy experience, who until recently was mayor of a town of 9,000 people.

Huh?

Who is Sarah Palin? Here's some basic background:

  • She was elected Alaska's governor a little over a year and a half ago. Her previous office was mayor of Wasilla, a small town outside Anchorage. She has no foreign policy experience.
  • Palin is strongly anti-choice, opposing abortion even in the case of rape or incest.
  • She supported right-wing extremist Pat Buchanan for president in 2000.
  • Palin thinks creationism should be taught in public schools.
  • She's doesn't think humans are the cause of climate change.
  • She's solidly in line with John McCain's "Big Oil first" energy policy. She's pushed hard for more oil drilling and says renewables won't be ready for years. She also sued the Bush administration for listing polar bears as an endangered species—she was worried it would interfere with more oil drilling in Alaska.
  • How closely did John McCain vet this choice? He met Sarah Palin once at a meeting. They spoke a second time, last Sunday, when he called her about being vice-president. Then he offered her the position.

This is information the American people need to see. Please take a moment to forward this email to your friends and family.

We also asked Alaska MoveOn members what the rest of us should know about their governor. The response was striking. Here's a sample:

She is really just a mayor from a small town outside Anchorage who has been a governor for only 1.5 years, and has ZERO national and international experience. I shudder to think that she could be the person taking that 3AM call on the White House hotline, and the one who could potentially be charged with leading the US in the volatile international scene that exists today. —Rose M., Fairbanks, AK

She is VERY, VERY conservative, and far from perfect. She's a hunter and fisherwoman, but votes against the environment again and again. She ran on ethics reform, but is currently under investigation for several charges involving hiring and firing of state officials. She has NO experience beyond Alaska. —Christine B., Denali Park, AK

As an Alaskan and a feminist, I am beyond words at this announcement. Palin is not a feminist, and she is not the reformer she claims to be. —Karen L., Anchorage, AK

Alaskans, collectively, are just as stunned as the rest of the nation. She is doing well running our State, but is totally inexperienced on the national level, and very much unequipped to run the nation, if it came to that. She is as far right as one can get, which has already been communicated on the news. In our office of thirty employees (dems, republicans, and nonpartisans), not one person feels she is ready for the V.P. position.—Sherry C., Anchorage, AK

She's vehemently anti-choice and doesn't care about protecting our natural resources, even though she has worked as a fisherman. McCain chose her to pick up the Hillary voters, but Palin is no Hillary. —Marina L., Juneau, AK

I think she's far too inexperienced to be in this position. I'm all for a woman in the White House, but not one who hasn't done anything to deserve it. There are far many other women who have worked their way up and have much more experience that would have been better choices. This is a patronizing decision on John McCain's part- and insulting to females everywhere that he would assume he'll get our vote by putting "A Woman" in that position.—Jennifer M., Anchorage, AK

So Governor Palin is a staunch anti-choice religious conservative. She's a global warming denier who shares John McCain's commitment to Big Oil. And she's dramatically inexperienced.

In picking Sarah Palin, John McCain has made the religious right very happy. And he's made a very dangerous decision for our country.

In the next few days, many Americans will be wondering what McCain's vice-presidential choice means.

Prison Break's Break Is Over

My TV viewing has diminished greatly of late. By late, I mean the past couple years. Tonight Prison Break is back on Fox. I find this show very entertaining. Due mostly to its plot being so over the top ridiculous with a non-stop need to suspend disbelief at a level I've never seen on any other TV show. Then again, there is LOST.

I don't know if Prison Break is still being filmed here in the Dallas/Fort Worth zone. In one of its more amusing lapses, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, with its ridiculous need to mention any connection to Fort Worth by anything on TV, didn't know that Prison Break's prison for season 2 was filmed near the Fort Worth Stockyards.

The Star-Telegram actually described the set of the prison as being in an abandoned warehouse in a town near Dallas! Fort Worth doesn't like being described as a town near Dallas.

The plot on Prison Break is so bizarrely convoluted I'm not sure I remember where we left off. Season 1 ended up with the prison break and the boys on the run. Season 2 ended up with some of the boys back in prison. Season 3 ended with most back out of prison with 1 or 2 back in.

Last season the doctor, Sara, who helped the main character, Michael Scoffield, escape along with his brother Lincoln Burrows, who was scheduled to be executed for a framed up murder, by the Vice-President, or was she the President? Anyway, Sara was held a hostage by the people behind all the bad deeds, along with Michael's brother's son, in order to force Michael to help another guy break out of the Panamanian prison.

See what I mean by convoluted? Anyway, back to Sara. By season 3 Michael and Sara's romance had bloomed, into what I don't remember. So, when Michael was not cooperating fast enough, to get his cooperation, Sara's head was delivered to Lincoln.

When Michael found out Sara had been killed he, of course, vowed revenge. Which leads us to tonight, with Michael out of prison, with some part of the U.S. government now on his side, with him pointing a gun at the person he believes killed Sara.

But, what Michael doesn't know and which will be one of Prison Break's more convoluted plot twists, is that Sara is alive. But we saw her killed. Didn't we? Pretty much Prison Break combines all the worst soap opera cliches with all the best prison movies with all the best conspiracy movies with some of the best comedy movies. I'm guessing this season at some point some of the characters are going to break into song and Prison Break will become a musical for a bit.

It's a 2 hour Prison Break season premiere tonight. I've not managed 2 hours of TV in a long time. I suspect tonight will be no exception.

Chesapeake Energy's Trinity Trees Tarnishing Remembered

Fresh incoming this morning from Don Young regarding damage being done in Fort Worth by gas drillers. And a protest rally scheduled for tomorrow.....

"A patriot must be always ready to defend his country (or city) against her/his government."-Edward Abbey

The beautiful and tranquil grove known as, Trinity Trees on the Trinity Trails along the Trinity River in Fort Worth, Texas were forever changed by the the decision to drill a High Impact gas well inside that grove. This grove is not about a single tree, though it contains many giants, but the magnificent canopy that shelters and comforts thousands of trail users each week.

Despite assurances that the quality of the area would not be altered, there is not much to be said for a partnership between industry and parkland. The two simply aren't in the same league, don't co-exist with the same goals and don't have the same voice. The parkland that we knew as Trinity Trees will never be the same

On Labor Day, 2007, hundreds of people gathered together under the old growth canopy to demonstrate in favor of preserving one of the most pleasant, wondrously pristine and most frequently visited site on Fort Worth's landmark Hike and Bike Trail. We failed to keep out the drilling but we found comradeship.

http://startelegram.typepad.com/barnett_shale/trinity_trees/index.html

This time, the Greenwood Grove is threatened with a High Impact gas well. This grove contains what are, undoubtedly, some of the largest trees in Fort Worth. Towering cottonwoods, oaks and pecans create a sheltering escape from a city gone mad.

The scenario this time is the same as before. A partnership between a private landowner and a big business want to drill another High Impact gas well that, ultimately will affect the entire city and the citizens who invest in it.

http://www.star-telegram.com/metro_news/story/873669.html

There are few places left in Fort Worth to escape gas drilling. The Trinity Trails should be one of them, but the industry, some landowners and the city have conspired to NOT protect the Trinity Trails. What can be done?

Please join supporters of Trinity Trees at City hall Tuesday evening, September 2nd at 6:30 pm to speak in favor of protecting the Greenwood Grove.

Also, please check out the Protect Trinity Trails website:

400 Pounds At 7 Years

I see kids here grossly overweight and wonder how a parent lets that happen. And why isn't it considered some sort of child abuse? I've seen little boys so fat they are ashamed to take off their shirt to get in the swimming pool. That's just sad.

It's one thing when an adult, for whatever reason, decides to abandon common sense and pack on pounds to the point of obesity, but a kid, they can't make that choice, or shouldn't. Some adult should be controlling what the kid eats.

The below video is a sorry sad thing. I've known adults in almost this condition, but never a little kid.

Meanwhile I've fallen to a new low. 167. I would have thought with all the forced feedings when I was in Washington that I would have packed on a few pounds, but no, I'm skinnier than ever.

The opposite of obese is no picnic either, I tell you. I need new clothes. I do not like shopping for new clothes. The only things that fit me are shirts and a coat my sister got me when she got tired of seeing me in the same ol' baggy stuff. Maybe I should eat more.

Neurotic Nancy Interviewed

State of Denial

No. I'm not talking about Texas.

That wonderfully eccentric bundle of lovable joy who calls herself Lulu gave me Bob Woodward's State of Denial while I was up in Tacoma recently. I didn't think I'd find it all that interesting. I was wrong.

If you want a shocking look at what brought about the Iraq fiasco, read this book. If you're the sort who doesn't want to know how hot dogs get made you probably will be equally squeamish to know how policy gets made with George W. at command. But it isn't George who comes out of the book looking all that bad. It's some of those who served him, worst being Donald Rumsfeld.

It's like the events of 9/11 were so shocking to those in command that rational thought went on hiatus and some sort of post-traumatic stress depression took over that tainted the decision making process. Almost like some form of mental illness, so much rationalizing, so much wishful, almost magical thinking.

I've had reason to think of late about mental illness and depression, why people get depressed, how they handle it, how those suffering from inner conflicts have troubles at times maintaining an even, rational keel.

I wonder if any of the people currently in the White House are on any psychotropic meds. I hope not, but I suspect there are at least one or two Wellbutrin/Lexapro poppers.

I was curious about side effects of Wellbutrin and Lexapro. I wasn't too shocked to learn there is evidence of several neuropsychiatric symptoms associated with Wellbutrin in patients with depression---including delusions, hallucinations, psychosis, concentration disturbance, paranoia, and confusion.

Lexapro is also sort of scary. Lexapro discontinuation, particularly abruptly, may cause certain withdrawal symptoms such as "electric shock" sensations (also known as "brain shivers" or "brain zaps"), dizziness and irritability. As with many other medications, you should avoid drinking alcoholic beverages while being treated with Lexapro.

Lexapro has a long list of side effects, like...

Arthritis - Painfully inflamed and swollen joints. The reddened and swollen condition is brought on by a serious injury or shock to the body either from physical or emotional causes.

Hepatic Enzymes Increased - An increase in the amount of paired liver proteins that regulate liver processes causing a condition where the liver functions abnormally.

Hyperglycemia - An unhealthy amount of sugar in the blood.

Increased Weight - A concentration and storage of fat in the body accumulating over a period of time caused by unhealthy eating patterns, that can predispose the body to many disorders and diseases.

Hypercholesterolemia - Too much cholesterol in the blood cells.

Back Discomfort - Severe physical distress in the area from the neck to the pelvis along the backbone.

Jaw Pain - The pain due to irritation and swelling of the nerves associated with the mouth area where it opens and closes just in front of the ear. Some of the symptoms are pain when chewing, head aches, losing your balance, stuffy ears or ringing in the ears, and teeth grinding.

Jaw Stiffness - The result of squeezing and grinding the teeth while asleep that can cause your teeth to deteriorate as well as the muscles and joints of the jaw.

Muscle Cramp - When muscles contract uncontrollably without warning and do not relax. The muscles of any of the body’s organs can cramp.

Thirst - A strong, unnatural craving for moisture/water in the mouth and throat.

Restless Legs - A need to move the legs without any apparent reason. Sometimes there is pain, twitching, jerking, cramping, burning, or a creepy-crawly sensation associated with the movements. It worsens when a person is inactive and can interrupt one’s sleep so one feels the need to move to gain some relief.

Shaking - Uncontrolled quivering and trembling as if one is cold and chilled.

Aggravated Nervousness - A progressively worsening, irritated and troubled state of mind.

Agitation - Suddenly violent and forceful, emotionally disturbed state of mind.

Apathy - Complete lack of concern or interest for things that ordinarily would be regarded as important or would normally cause concern.

Carbohydrate Craving - A drive and craving to eat foods rich in sugar and starches (sweets, snacks and junk foods) that intensifies as the diet becomes more and more unbalanced due to the unbalancing of the proper nutritional requirements of the body.

Confusion - Not able to think clearly and understand in order to make a logical decision.

Forgetfulness - Unable to remember what one ordinarily would remember.

Irritability - Abnormally annoyed in response to a stimulus.

Restlessness Aggravated - A constantly worsening troubled state of mind characterized by the person being increasingly nervous, unable to relax, and easily angered.

Tremulousness Nervous - Very jumpy, shaky, and uneasy while feeling fearful and timid. The condition is characterized by thoughts of dreading the future, involuntary quivering, trembling, and feeling distressed and suddenly upset.

Yawning - involuntary opening of the mouth with deep inhalation of air.

Okay, I don't need to list anymore bad Lexapro things, I'm almost convinced Donald Rumsfeld was being medicated by psychotropics. It explains so much. That last one on the list is disturbing. Was someone slipping Lexapro in my water when I was up north? Because I was constantly yawning. I never yawn. Or hadn't til my month in Tacoma. I've not yawned once since I've been back in Texas.

National Geographic's Top 50 Best Places to Live

National Geographic Adventure magazine's September 2008 issue has one of those lists ranking cities and towns by who knows what criteria. The article seems a bit unfocused, judging just by the titles.

As in "50 Best Places to Live: The Next Great Adventure Towns. Where to Live + Play Now! The fifty next great adventure towns."

I guess it isn't too shocking that only one Texas town made this list. Texas towns don't often appear on these type lists. Unless it's in something like Men's Health. And then it's not a good thing to be on the list. The one Texas town that made the list is San Antonio. With San Antonio being in the Top 12 along with Seattle.

National Geographic divided the list by regions. Somehow Reno and Tucson ended up in the Rockies region. You don't see any Rocky Mountains in Reno or Tucson.

Anyway, here's the list. Those in BOLD are Top 12 picks, in no particular order.
